The entertainment world was saddened to learn of the death of Penny Marshall, due to complications from diabetes at age 75. The Bronx-born sitcom standout entered the public consciousness on TV's "Happy Days" and "Laverne & Shirley"- two of the most popular programs of the 1970s. Her big brother Garry, a super-successful producer/director, encouraged a move behind the camera during the Reagan era, where she soon proved more than capable of orchestrating comedic gold. "Big" and "A League of Their Own" are two of the greatest films of the late '80s-early '90s, and it's no coincidence that both of these $100 million hits brought out the best in Tom Hanks. Do yourself a favor and give 1990's Oscar nominee "Awakenings" another look, while you're at it. Robert De Niro and Robin Williams were both moving in change-of-pace roles. Few filmmakers combined humor and heart as expertly as Penny Marshall.
